The Ceramic Museum of Westerwald built in 1982, houses over five centuries of ceramic history in its some 1500 square meters.
Spread out over four bright and large exhibition levels the museum visitor is provided with a survey of the historical development of ceramics. Starting with examples of pre-historic ceramics, continuing through the origins of Westerwald stoneware, ornamental vessels of the Renaissance, and art deco vases, the collection concludes with contemporary examples from the 50’s, through the 90’s of the last century. Through its spectacular exhibitions and the opening of the Westerwald prize to international participation, the Westerwald Museum has established itself as a world class center for contemporary ceramic art. The numerous special exhibitions are geared to both the practicing professional as well as visiting tourists and explore the latest tendencies in ceramic art. Symposia and lectures encourage discussion. The museum presents craft and tradition, freely formed sculptures, thrown and altered works, as well as the cutting edge of innovations in materials and technique.
Museum Educational Programs
Pitchers, vases, plates, lamp shades, flower pots, animal figurines, jewelery beads or masks - so many things can be made out of clay. The museum invites you to visit the educational center. There everyone, whether large or small, can learn how to work with clay, experience it for themselves and copy historic examples if you choose. Our educational staff will be happy to show the many possiblities of form and decoration. Reservations are highly recommended.
In 2 or 3 forty-five minute sessions the visitor is presented with a short introduction to the basic principles of ceramics, and provided with examples from the museum’s display cases of historical objects, and tools, as well as the model kiln. A practical "hands on" exercise follows under the expert direction of the museum educators. Especially interesting is a visit to the museum’s pottery, where beautiful ceramic pieces are available for sale.
The museum is also an ideal site for children’s birthday celebrations! Ask for details. For a nominal fee, the finished pieces can be fired and picked up at a later date.
Group tours of the exhibitions are offered by informed docents, and a demonstration on the pottery wheel can also be arranged (please register in advance).
